Orion Trail VR is a single-player science fiction adventure developed by Schell Games. A VR reimagining of the original 2D desktop game, it places players in the cockpit of the Galaxy Force flagship as they attempt to survive the perilous journey across the Orion Trail. Built on the Unity engine, the game transitions the procedural narrative and resource management of the original into an immersive first-person experience. Players must make life-or-death decisions for their crew, manage vital resources like food and fuel, and interact with quirky officers, all while surrounded by the game's signature "pun-heavy" humor and retro-futuristic aesthetic. It was recognized by the Proto Awards as an Honoree for Best User Interface.

- How does the VR version differ from the original Orion Trail?
- While the core loop of making choices and managing resources remains the same, the perspective is completely different. In the original, you viewed the ship and events from a 2D pixel-art side view. In the VR version, you are physically sitting in the captain's chair. Your crew and the ship's controls are all around you, making the "tough calls" feel more immediate and personal.
- What was the significance of the "Best User Interface" award?
- Designing a UI for VR is a major challenge because traditional 2D menus can break immersion. Orion Trail VR was honored by the Proto Awards for its innovative use of a "diegetic" UI—meaning the menus and game data (like fuel levels and health) are integrated directly into the physical buttons and screens of the ship's console rather than floating in front of the player's face.
- Does the game still have permadeath?
- Yes. True to its "Oregon Trail in space" roots, the game is a roguelike. If you run out of fuel, your crew starves, or your hull is destroyed, the mission ends. You have to start over with a new captain and ship, though the procedural nature of the encounters ensures that no two "trails" are exactly the same.
- Who are the "Officers"?
- You start each run by choosing a team of officers. In VR, these characters are standing at their stations around you. Each officer represents a specific stat (Science, Combat, Diplomacy, etc.). When you encounter an anomaly or an alien, you often look at a specific officer to choose a course of action based on their specialty.
- Is the humor still intact?
- Absolutely. The game retains the same writer and pun-heavy style as the original. The transition to VR allows for more visual humor, such as seeing the exaggerated reactions of your crew or the bizarre appearances of alien life forms through the ship's viewscreen.
