But that's just the beginning of what our incredible audio engineers at Schell Games are able to do with a game like this.
Just in time for Halloween, we challenged Joseph Adams, Advanced Artist at Schell Games, to develop an album of lofi beats inspired by our latest game. Join us for a quick look behind the music as Advanced Artist Joseph Adams showcases his inspirations and everything that goes into creating music for Silent Slayer and other Schell Games projects.
What are the challenges in creating music for a game like Silent Slayer?
One of the biggest challenges I had was that I have never done horror music or worked on a horror game before. As the project went on and things started to come together you begin to become more in tune with the overall vibe and feel of the game and it was easier to start putting together some musical ideas.
We had an overall musical direction at the beginning of the project as well, so I was able to gather those ideas and morph together the music for Silent Slayer. Another challenge I faced was trying to figure out how to implement the music in a dynamic way without taking the “silent” factor out of the gameplay. I was able to break the music up in a way that allowed for the “ambient” tracks of music to stack and build up tension as the player received strikes.
What was your inspiration for the tracks you created?
The inspiration for the tracks came from a few simple ideas, such as creating some catchy chord progressions and just building up from there. I did have one day where it was raining and I used that as a theme for one of the tracks.
What other game music have you worked on for Schell Games or for other game companies?
I worked on the music for Silent Slayer and a few side projects at the studio. I have also done music for a couple indie studios when I was freelancing. One of which was a sci-fi space shooter combat game, which I actually turned into a 30-minute album on YouTube. I also created many one-hour length ambient music tracks, which was part of my last job before coming to Schell Games.
Favorite video game soundtrack or composer and why?
I’m an old school gamer and would have to say that my favorite video game soundtrack is Donkey Kong Country for the SNES by David Wise. My favorite track from that game is the Underwater level song called Aquatic Ambience.

["file://B785Qm4hajpEl6WJ
