Lionel Battle Train is a mobile action-strategy game developed by Schell Games in partnership with the iconic model train company Lionel. Built on the Unity engine, the game shifts the brand away from peaceful hobbyist layouts and into a post-apocalyptic "steampunk" world. Players command a customizable battle train, arming it with various weapons and defenses to protect valuable cargo from marauding raiders and "boss" locomotives. The gameplay blends resource management—requiring players to balance speed and fuel while navigating a branching rail network—with real-time combat. By modernizing the 100-year-old Lionel brand for a Family audience, the project demonstrates how classic IP can be successfully adapted into a contemporary mobile gaming format.

- mission-based progression
- Steampunk
- post-apocalypse
- How do you "fight" with a train?
- Unlike traditional vehicles that can steer, trains are locked to tracks. The strategy comes from train composition and weapon placement. Players add specialized cars to their train—such as machine gun cars, missile launchers, or armored plating—and must activate abilities at the right time to fend off enemies attacking from the sides or the air.
- Is it an open-world game?
- The game features a branching rail map. Between combat encounters, players must choose which tracks to take. Some routes might be shorter but more heavily defended, while others might offer more fuel or repair parts. This adds a layer of strategic navigation to the linear nature of rail travel.
- Can you customize the locomotive?
- Yes. A major draw for Lionel fans is the ability to collect and upgrade different parts. Players can swap out engines for more power, add cowcatchers to ram through obstacles, and change the aesthetic of the train to match the gritty, battle-worn world of the game.
- Why did Lionel partner with Schell Games for this?
- Lionel wanted to reach a younger demographic that primarily plays on mobile devices. Schell Games was chosen for their expertise in "Casual Action" design—creating games that are easy to pick up and play in short bursts but have enough depth (via the upgrade and strategy systems) to keep players coming back.
- What is the "Post-Apocalyptic" setting like?
- The game is set in a world where the rail system is the only remaining lifeline between isolated settlements. This "steampunk" aesthetic allows for creative, oversized weaponry and stylized environments that feel distinct from the realistic model train sets Lionel is traditionally known for.
- What is the primary challenge for the player?
- The biggest challenge is Resource Management. Your weapons and speed consume fuel and energy. If you go too fast, you might run out of fuel before reaching the next station; if you go too slow, you are an easy target for enemies. Finding the "Golden Mean" of speed and defense is key to survival.
