Middle SchoolOverview
Tunnel Tail is a mobile adventure game developed by Schell Games in partnership with the BEST Foundation and Drug Strategies. Aimed primarily at Middle School students, the game serves as a creative health and wellness intervention. Players lead a colony of "Lumini" (mouse-like creatures) as they defend their tunnels against an encroaching darkness known as "The Corruption." While the gameplay features exploration, creature collection, and strategy, it is fundamentally an allegory for drug prevention. The mechanics encourage positive social behaviors, the importance of a supportive community, and the rejection of harmful external influences. By using a vibrant fantasy world rather than a classroom lecture, Tunnel Tail engages youth in critical thinking about self-care and decision-making.

- How does the game teach about drug prevention without being "preachy"?
- The game uses metaphorical storytelling. Instead of mentioning drugs, it features "The Corruption," an attractive but destructive force that drains the life and light from the Lumini. Players learn that to thrive, they must help the Lumini stay connected to their community and their "inner light," which reinforces the real-world concept of "protective factors"—the social and personal strengths that keep kids from trying drugs.
- What is the "Lumini" mechanic?
- Players collect and care for different types of Lumini. Each has unique traits, and the player must manage the colony's energy. This teaches responsibility and stewardship. The player sees that when the Lumini are well-cared for and work together, they are strong enough to push back the darkness, mirroring the importance of a healthy support network.
- Why was the Middle School age group targeted?
- Research shows that this is the "bridge" period where children transition into adolescence and are most likely to encounter their first exposures to peer pressure and substances. Tunnel Tail aims to build a psychological foundation of self-efficacy (the belief in one’s own ability to succeed) before those real-world challenges escalate.
- Is there an interactive element with the real world?
- The game was originally released alongside a physical card game and community outreach programs. This multi-channel approach allowed the message of the game to be reinforced in classrooms and at home, turning a digital experience into a broader social movement for healthy living.
- What role does "Light" play in the game?
- Light is the primary resource and a symbol for positivity and health. Players must solve puzzles to bring light into the dark tunnels. This serves as a gameplay mechanic for progression, but also as a symbolic representation of how knowledge and positive choices can dispel the "fog" of negative influences.
- Who were the partners on this project?
- The project was a collaboration with Drug Strategies (a non-profit research institute) and the BEST Foundation, ensuring that the "stealth education" within the game was based on actual behavioral science and proven prevention strategies.
